Case Study – Devon Pig Farmer Sees ‘Marked Effect’ with BioComplex PLUS

A Devon based pig farmer has been analysing the results of using Ekogea’s BioComplex PLUS feed ingredient in the diets for their growers and finishers resulting in:

40g per day improvement in the grower stage and 4kg increase in deadweight
More even batches of cleaner pigs with healthier guts and lower mortality
Improvements in pig behaviour
Less crusting and quicker clearance of slurry
Greater than 50% reduction recorded in ammonia (NH₃)
Cost savings leading to a significant return on capital invested

Trial Protocol & Measurements

An initial trial was conducted with BioComplex PLUS added to the pigs’ diets, from weaning to transfer to the finishing unit 8 weeks later. No other changes to management occurred to allow for comparison. Airborne ammonia was independently monitored twice daily and growth rates were recorded and compared to previous batches.

As a result of the encouraging initial trial results, the farm included BioComplex PLUS into their finishing rations and differences in dead weights were compared to previous batches.

Summary of Results

The farm recorded an increase in daily growth in weaners in excess of 40g, with transfer weight increasing by over 2kg. Slaughter dead weights had increased by 4kg per pig.

Slurry throughout the stages all showed less crusting which all but eliminated the need to stir before clearing, giving a saving in time and cost. Flank and tail biting were also greatly reduced with none recorded at the most recent veterinary visit.

A reduction in odour from the farm in general has been noticeable both on a day-to-day basis and when spreading slurry. This followed a recorded drop of over 50% in ammonia emissions.

In terms of increased weight alone the inclusion of BioComplex PLUS in the diet has delivered a significant return on capital invested.
